There are different versions of the bible. Not because they say different things; rather, they say the same things in different ways, all based on the original manuscripts which were for the most part written in Hebrew and Greek.
If you like words - try the English Standard Version (ESV) or the Amplified Bible. They have a work-for-word approach, pretty much as they appear in the original languages the bible was written in.
If you like stories - Try the Good News Bible or the New Living Translation (NLT) version. They have a thought-for-thought approach, presenting the stories based on the original words, but using language that makes more sense for reading today.
The New International Version (NIV) is a good mix of a word-for-word and through-for-thought approach.
If you like a mixture of plain language and poetry - Try The Message Bible. A paraphrased version of the bible designed to explore the meanings behind the words.
